Solar Solution Engineer – Nelson

The Role

The Solution Engineer is a senior technical role responsible for providing expertise, oversight, and problem-solving across all areas of the business.

You will work across the full lifecycle of projects — from solution design and technical sales support through to commissioning, troubleshooting, optimisation, compliance, and quality assurance, you’ll even undertake installation and repair work where appropriate.

This role combines practical field capability with high-level technical thinking and requires someone who is equally comfortable:

  • diagnosing faults on-site,
  • supporting the team remotely,
  • designing complex systems,
  • analysing performance data,
  • and helping shape the company’s technical direction.

You’ll work with a wide range of technologies including Fronius, Victron, Sigenergy, BYD, Kubota and Cummins

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Act as the company’s lead technical resource across solar PV, battery storage, inverter systems, generators, controls, and associated electrical systems
  • Provide technical support to installers, electricians, operations staff, and customers both remotely and on-site
  • Troubleshoot and resolve faults, commissioning issues, communication problems, and system performance concerns
  • Analyse system data and monitoring platforms to identify faults, inefficiencies, and optimisation opportunities
  • Maintain advanced working knowledge of all products and software platforms used by the business

System Design & Engineering

  • Design and review complex energy systems, particularly:
    • Off-grid systems
    • Hybrid battery systems
    • Large residential projects
    • Small-to-medium commercial installations
    • Emerging larger-scale commercial projects
  • Develop practical, reliable, and compliant system solutions tailored to customer requirements
  • Assist with system architecture, product selection, integration, and technical documentation

Project Delivery

  • Lead larger, technically challenging, or high-value projects
  • Provide commissioning support and technical oversight during installations
  • Ensure installations are completed to a high technical and workmanship standard
  • Support the team to deliver projects safely, efficiently, and consistently
  • Manage multiple projects and competing priorities effectively

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Provide technical quality assurance across the company’s work
  • Ensure systems meet relevant New Zealand electrical standards and compliance requirements
  • Stay current with regulations, standards, and industry best practice
  • Act as the in-house expert for electrical and mechanical compliance
  • Issue Certificates of Compliance and sign off work where required

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor emerging products, technologies, and industry developments
  • Assess and introduce new products and systems into operational use
  • Help improve internal technical processes, documentation, commissioning procedures, and training resources
  • Support ongoing technical development within the wider team

Customer & Sales Support

  • Attend customer and sales meetings to provide technical expertise and solution guidance
  • Translate technical concepts into practical, customer-focused solutions
  • Build confidence and trust with customers through clear communication and strong technical capability

About You

You are a technically strong and solutions-focused electrician or electrical engineer who takes pride in delivering high-quality work.

You have excellent troubleshooting skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to balance hands-on technical work with project-level thinking. You are comfortable working independently, while also contributing positively to a collaborative team environment.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Registered Electrician or Electrical Engineer with a Mains Parallel endorsement, or able to become eligible for the endorsement promptly (we will support training if necessary)
  • Strong experience with solar PV, battery storage, and electrical systems
  • Experience with off-grid and hybrid energy systems
  • Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting capability
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation
  • Excellent organisational and project management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities
  • High attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Full New Zealand driver licence

Desirable

  • Experience with Victron, Fronius, Sigenergy, BYD, or similar components
  • Experience with commercial solar and energy systems
  • Generator integration and controls experience
  • Experience with monitoring platforms, data analysis, and remote diagnostics
  • Experience with automation, controls, or energy management systems

Additional Information

  • This is a permanent role
  • Nelson based but some away work is required (typically 1–3 nights per month)
  • The role includes a mix of office, remote support, workshop, and on-site field work
